Heat pump questions, answered

The questions Auckland homeowners ask us most, answered plainly. Still unsure? Give us a call and we'll happily help.

What size heat pump do I need for my room?
It comes down to the size of the room, the ceiling height, how well it is insulated, and how many windows it has. Too small and it struggles on a cold morning, too big and it short cycles and wastes power. A proper in-home assessment is the only way to get it right, and it should be free.
How much does a heat pump cost to install?
Most single room installs sit in a sensible range, with the final price down to the unit you choose and how tricky the install is. A back to back install on an easy wall is cheaper than a long pipe run or a high wall. A clear, itemised quote up front means no surprises later.
How often should a heat pump be serviced?
Once a year is the rule of thumb for a home heat pump, and more often if you run it hard or have pets. A service clears the filters and coils, checks the gas and drainage, and keeps the air clean. A serviced unit runs cheaper and lasts a lot longer.
Are heat pumps expensive to run?
No, they are one of the cheapest ways to heat a home. A modern heat pump puts out several times more heat than the power it draws, so running costs are well below a plug in heater or an old gas system. The right size for the room makes the biggest difference to your bill.
Can a heat pump cool my house in summer?
Yes. A heat pump works both ways, so the same unit that warms you in winter cools you in summer. That is part of why they are such good value, you get year round comfort from one quiet, efficient unit rather than two separate systems.
Do heat pumps help with damp and mould?
They help a lot. A heat pump warms the air and keeps it moving, which lifts the humidity that feeds mould and condensation on windows. Paired with good ventilation it makes a real difference to how healthy and dry a home feels, especially through winter.
How long does an install take?
A standard single room install is usually done in a few hours, start to finish, including tidying up after ourselves. A multi room or ducted system takes longer and we will give you a realistic timeframe before we start rather than an optimistic one we cannot keep.
Which heat pump brand is best?
There is no single best brand, only the right unit for your room, your home and your budget. We work with Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Panasonic and Fujitsu because they are reliable and quiet, and we recommend based on what suits you, not what we are trying to shift.
